Epilepsy is a common chronicmedicine" neurological disorder characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. These seizures are transient signs and/or symptoms of abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain.
Epilepsy has three characteristics: sudden onset, recurrence and long duration of illness.
Epilepsy is a common neurological disease in the world which ranks second next to cerebrovascular diseases in neurological system. Data shows that morbidity of epilepsy in developed countries reaches to 0.3-0.7%, and that of developing countries increases to 1.5-3-5%. China has 6 million of epilepsy patients with morbidity of 0.5%, and 650-700 thousands of new patients come out each year. Three fourths of patients can be controlled by major Western medicine, but one fourth is intractable seizure whose number reaches to 1.5 million in country.
Epilepsy can be categorized into primary and secondary epilepsy according to etiology. Primary epilepsy refers to that without specific brain etiological factors under recent medical investigation system, which accounts for 60 % of total patients. While underlied reasons for primary epilepsy is not clear, secondary epilepsy refers to patients with specific traceable reasons, which accounts for 40%.
